How to break down ANY goal

Do you sometimes find it hard to break down huge goals and projects?

Do you get into a place where because you don’t know what to do, you don’t do anything at all towards your goal, or you do, but it’s not really directed or strategic and doesn’t really help?

Today I’m going to show you a Ridiculously Simple Method of breaking down a big ‘someday’ goal that you have, and how to figure out what you could be doing today, to make the biggest impact to the outcome and your results.

There are two parts to this method which I learned from Gary Keller and Jay Papasan in “The One Thing – The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results.” It’s stupidly simple, really. But before you start, you should be clear on what your goal is. Why is it important to you? What will accomplishing this goal do for your life? What will happen if you do not accomplish the goal?

#1: The focusing question

“What’s the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

The book breaks down the domino effect this creates and how to identify what your big domino is. That’s what they mean by making everything else easier or unnecessary. You push that big domino and it’s going to push the other dominoes over. Making it easier for you – or unnecessary to do anything else.

#2: The goal breakdown

Then, the goal breakdown – this is great for when you need to stop the treadmill and ask yourself ‘is what I’m doing the most impactful thing I can do? Is there something else I should be doing that will create more ripples?’

So you have your big goal. The trick is to step backwards from it – from big picture to small focus.

Start at the point you want to have achieved your goal. For this example it’s a long way off and I haven’t put a specific date on it – it’s just ‘someday’.

  1. What’s the one thing I can do in the next 5 years towards my someday goal, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
  2. What’s the one thing I can do in the next year towards my 5 year goal, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary? What’s the one thing i can do this month to impact my 12 month goal?
  3. What’s the one thing I can do in the next month towards my one year goal, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
  4. What’s the one thing I can do in the next week towards my monthly goal, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
  5. What’s the one thing I can do today towards my weekly goal, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
  6. What’s the one thing I can do right now towards my daily goal, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?

And there you have your one thing that you could do today that will have the most impact on your big goal.

So, what’s your big goal? And what are you going to do today? Here’s to extraordinary results!
